Gymbal – iPhone 4 Case & Tripod Review

by Patrick Gervais

I thought I would write a review of the case I use for my iPhone 4. I bought the Gymbal a while back after hearing about it on the “This Week In Photo” podcast.

The Youbiq website states “The Gymbal has a gimbal, a pivoting, panoramic head that lets you rotate the  iPhone4 around its optical center.” This is a great feature and makes it easier to get better results for panoramas.

The tripod clips into the iPhone 4 case very easily and tightly. Once attached you just pull out the 3 legs and position the iPhone however you want it. It’s small enough that it can fit in your pocket. The case on its own is nice. It is made of a hard plastic and feels good when holding the iPhone.

One problem I did have was the edges of the screen protector I use got all messed up when installing the case. All I did was remove the case, trim the protector and re-install the case. The screen looks a little weird because of the way I cut the protector but still works fine and I don’t really care how it looks.

I bought the pro version because it comes with a real tripod adapter. This way I can use the Gymbal to attach it to my full size tripod if I ever need to. It is a little pricey at $99.00 for the pro version. Although it does include a case, the tripod AND the tripod adapter so I think it’s worth it. The standard model is $69.00.

I also think it would be great if Youbiq comes out with a tripod similar to the Gorillapod system. That way it would be easier to position the iPhone exactly where you want it and even attach it securely to tree branches, fences or other odd places to get the perfect shot.

All in all I really like the Gymbal case & tripod. I’ve tried other cases but this one serves two purposes, protect the iPhone and connect to the tripod.

What do you think? What do you use?

Thanks for reading, Patrick
