Image of the Week #5
“Jennifer Bracewell is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area and grew up in a creative, musical environment. She is a mother, an artist, a photographer, an iPhoneographer, and music lover. Much of Jennifer’s work is an exploration of self and image: the manipulation of self-portraits to bring out elements of humor, angst and beauty. Her other works are an eclectic mix of country shots, animals, and captures of ephemeral moments in everyday life.” This was taken from Jennifer’s website.
Here below is a comment from Jennifer she sent me for this blog post, thanks Jennifer.
“I have loved taking photos with my iPhone since I first got it in 2009. At the moment I’m anxiously awaiting the UPS man with my 4S.. very excited to see what that new camera has in store.
iPhoneography or mobile photography, whichever you prefer, has been my main creative outlet as of late. Having children to cart around has made it difficult to carry on with my painting and photography with SLR, lenses and the whole thing. I love having this little camera in my pocket.
This image was taken in Santa Cruz at the Boardwalk. I like to play with color and motion using blurring effects, layers and filtering. Iris and Filterstorm are my two go-to apps, but I have probably 100+ photo apps (yikes) Much of what I do is self-portraiture, partly because I don’t get out enough and partly because I find it fun to transform myself into different characters and explore my emotions this way. I am extremely happy to get recognition for my images and to be a part of this wonderful community of photographers/artists. Meeting so many gracious, talented people has been the best part of iPhoneography for me.”
I echo what Jennifer mentions regarding the iPhoneography community. In the small amount of time I’ve gotten involved with iPhoneography it is easy to sense the friendliness of this growing group of passionate photographers. You see many of the same people on the various websites and it really feels like a small close group. Each person I’ve contacted for this Image of the Week series has always been very helpful.
Ok, back to the image “Don’t Look Down” I selected. This image is, well it’s an amazing piece, but also because it is different from what we see from Jennifer. She creates a lot of self portraits and like Roger Guetta from last week, her work is very conceptual with textures and composites. I have to say that she is a very accomplished artist and very busy. Here are some exhibitions where her work has appeared:
- ADOBE POP-UP SHOP, SAN FRANCISCO, JULY 2011
- GIORGI GALLERY, BERKELEY, CA SEPT 2011- NOV 2011
- STEPHANE VEREEKEN GALLERY, BRUSSELS, BELGIUM OCTOBER 2011
